Meet Our Urologists
Alan Weinberg, MD, FACS
Alan C. Weinberg, MD, FACS is the son of an Air Force officer and spent formative years living both in Europe and the US, attending Duke University for college where he graduated magna cum laude in 1977. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1981, and then attended the University of Southern California School of Medicine for his surgical internship and urology residency, finishing in 1986. Since then, he has been in private practice in the North Orange County area.
Dr. Weinberg has been the recipient of multiple awards over many years, including “Top Doctors in America,” Orange County Medical Association “Physician of Excellence,” and named often in “Top Urologists in America.” He has published many research articles both in peer-review journals and textbooks, primarily in the field of continent urinary diversion. He speaks nationally on the subject of controlling cost in the medical environment.
Dr. Weinberg is also a certified da Vinci robotic surgeon, performs and teaches InterStim neuromodulation to other surgeons, and is a specialist in the field of urinary incontinence.
He is board-certified and three times recertified, and is also a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He has been Chief of Surgery at local hospitals and continues an active urology practice in the North Orange County area.
Michael Gazzaniga, MD, FACS
Dr. Michael Gazzaniga is a board certified urologist of Southand Urology. He is a native Southern Californian. He attended medical school at Dartmouth Medical in Hanover, New Hampshire. In 1996, he returned to California and completed his residency in Urology at UC Irvine Medical Center. While on staff at UC Irvine he served as clinical instructor to residents.
Since joining Southland Urology in 2002 Dr. Gazzaniga has been the recipient of Orange Coast Magazine’s “Physician of Excellence” award, as voted on by his peers within the Orange County Medical Association. He has received this distinction from 2006 to 2020. He has published articles on topics which include laparoscopic surgery and prostate cancer. He has served as Chief of Surgery and he was director of the Urologic Oncology division at St Jude Medical Center. He belongs to the Orange County Urological Society, OCMA and is a member of the AMA. He has volunteered multiple years to Access OC which provides free surgical care to the uninsured.
Dr. Gazzaniga has done many lectures throughout Orange County and nationally on topics which include Robotic Surgery and neuromodulation of urological disorders. He has traveled throughout the United States as an instructor teaching other surgeons surgical techniques in neuromodulation (Interstim). He has also been assigned by Intuitive Surgical to proctor urologists throughout the United States the discipline of Robotic Radical Prostatectomy.
More recently he was involved in the studies that allowed FDA approval of SpaceOar and has performed over a hundred of these in-office
Eric Tygenhof, MD, FACS
Dr. Eric Tygenhof was born and raised in Orange County. He graduated from Stanford University in 2004 and from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in 2009. There he was selected into the prestigious medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency at the University of Southern California Institute of Urology, annually recognized as one of the nation’s top training programs.
Trained by one of the world’s most honored robotic surgeons, Dr. Tygenhof has a particular interest in robotic kidney-sparing surgery for kidney cancer, robotic prostate removal for cancer, and robotic techniques for benign urologic disease. In addition to minimally-invasive surgery, particularly da Vinci robotics, his training also emphasized urologic prosthetics and reconstruction, female urology, pediatric urology, urologic oncology, and stone disease.
Dr. Tygenhof is a member of the American Urologic Association, the Western Section American Urologic Association, the California Urological Association, the Endourological Society, and the Society of Robotic Surgery. His research in the field of urologic prosthetic surgery has been presented at numerous national meetings.
