Rezūm at Southland Urology

Rezūm therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that uses the natural thermal energy of water vapor to reduce the size of the prostate gland. The procedure involves delivering small, targeted bursts of steam directly into the prostate tissue. By shrinking the enlarged tissue, Rezūm therapy helps to relieve urinary symptoms, such as frequent or urgent urination, without the need for surgery or daily medication.

Understanding Rezūm

What Is Rezūm Therapy?

Rezūm therapy is an innovative and minimally invasive procedure designed to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Unlike traditional surgical procedures, Rezūm uses the power of sterile water vapor, or steam, to shrink the excess prostate tissue that is pressing on the urethra and causing urinary symptoms. The procedure is performed in a doctor’s office or clinic and does not require general anesthesia, making it a convenient option for many men.

How Does Rezūm Work?

During the Rezūm procedure, a small device is inserted through the urethra and positioned next to the enlarged prostate tissue. The device then releases targeted, 9-second bursts of sterile water vapor into the tissue. The steam diffuses through the prostate cells, and when it condenses back into water, it releases a significant amount of thermal energy. This energy causes the cells to die, and over time, the body’s natural healing response absorbs the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate and opening the urinary channel.

The Procedure

The Rezūm procedure is a simple, outpatient process. After a local anesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area, the doctor inserts the Rezūm device into the urethra. The number of steam injections depends on the size and shape of the prostate, but the entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes. Because the treatment is precise and targeted, it is designed to spare a man’s sexual function. Patients can usually go home the same day and return to their normal activities within a day or two.

Benefits of Rezūm Therapy

Rezūm therapy offers several significant advantages over other BPH treatments. It is a one-time treatment that provides long-lasting relief from symptoms, eliminating the need for daily BPH medication. The procedure is minimally invasive, with a lower risk of bleeding or infection compared to surgical options. Most importantly, clinical studies have shown that Rezūm therapy preserves a man’s urinary and sexual function, including erectile and ejaculatory function. This is a key benefit for men who are concerned about the side effects of other BPH treatments.

Recovery and Results

Following the procedure, it is normal to experience some temporary side effects, such as a stinging sensation during urination or blood in the urine. These symptoms typically resolve within a few weeks. While some men may see improvement within a couple of weeks, the full results of the treatment are usually realized over the course of three months, as the body gradually absorbs the treated prostate tissue.

What To Expect

Before the Rezūm procedure, a urologist will perform a complete evaluation, including a physical exam and a discussion of your symptoms. After the procedure, you will receive detailed instructions on post-treatment care and follow-up appointments. Most men are able to return to work and their daily routines quickly, and as the prostate shrinks, they can expect a significant improvement in their urinary flow and a reduction in the urgency and frequency of urination.
